Wood Stoves

Whether you are an old hand at wood burning or a novice looking for your first hearth appliance, you will be impressed by today's wood stoves and what they offer. Design innovations and advances in technology have created a new generation of appliances that are safer, more efficient and easier to use than ever imaginable a few decades ago.

Today's EPA-certified clean burning stoves benefit from years of combustion engineering and research. Wood burning appliances tested and approved by the Environmental Protection Agency are required to burn 85 percent cleaner than conventional stoves manufactured before the mid-1980s. A conventional stove's emission level was over 40 grams per hour, while today’s stoves burn at an average emissions level of just 6 grams of particulate per hour.

In order to obtain these high standards, all of today's appliances use one of two unique technologies -- catalytic or non-catalytic. Simply stated, catalytic appliances use a ceramic catalytic combustor coated with platinum or palladium to reduce the ignition temperature of smoke.  This burning of the smoke generates heat, which is captured in the stove and radiated out into the room.  A non-catalytic appliance manipulates the air flow within the fire box to help ignite the wood gases and volatiles.  Extra air is introduced above the firebox, “burning” the smoke.  Smoke is heat.  The more of it burned within a stove, the more efficient and cleaner burn you will have.  That is why an open fireplace is so inefficient.  All the smoke goes up the chimney unburned…wasted.  These new design innovations provide longer burn times without reloading, heftier efficiencies with 25-33 percent less fuel and reduce flammable creosote by 90 percent.

A wood stove can be vented through the ceiling and out the roof or exit out a side wall and go up the side of the house. They can also be installed into an existing masonry fireplace to increase the efficiency.  Bottom line = if it burns wood, the chimney must go up to the top of the building.

With an array of porcelain enamel color choices, woodstoves today are not only heaters but also a fine piece of furniture.  Check out our burning displays in our newly renovated showroom.  We have traditional as well as modern / contemporary styles for you to see.
